Sparked by the campaign to save the ancient forest of Penrhos from being turned into a holiday camp, ‘Naming the Trees’ celebrates the natural world, and considers (with some frustration) the various ways it is threatened by human intervention.

Ness has an ongoing conversation with her native language, and in this collection, she draws a link between the disregarding of native language and of native habitat.
Though predominantly written in English, Naming the Trees includes several poems that are presented bilingually – in both English and Welsh.
“. . .As we plead with them not to fell our ancient forests
Seeing that we ask them not to build a fence to keep us out
Given that, in our language, we can dod yn ôl at ein coed
Considering that trees rose in battle Since our trees can half burn
While trees are our lungs, our hearts, our medicine. . .”
